Yeah, good ep for the sole point of showing that mercy in times of war is just silly... so so so silly.

Picard deserved to have his head ripped off by Nechayev for his actions regarding Hugh. Also, Deanna? You're a moron.

I loved how Picard declares that the moral thing might not always be the right thing like it was some kind of profound revelation. Then again this is Picard so to him it might have been.

I was giving him credit just for figuring it out. Even if a bit late, we're still talking about TNG era people. They're about as quick as flat mud and twice as sharp.

Agreed with Deep. Early Picard couldn't find the correct thing, if different from the righteous thing, with both hands and a hunting dog.

Re: SFDebris: Descent part 1
I would like to credit this ep, along with Best of Both Worlds as being a turning point for the hippie era Federation of TNG. As we see with Nechayev and Sisko, a total change of heart from the then current attitude of "Peace and Moral High Ground" to "We have to survive at any cost".

Re: SFDebris: Descent part 1
I think it was an easy enough realization. I think the problem was less that of people unwilling to fight as much as people being willing to admit that there's nasty shit out there.

They spent to long at peace IMO which led to them forgetting that sometimes you have to fight for whats yours and whats right.

There is only one way of avoiding the war – that is the overthrow of this society. However, as we are too weak for this task, the war is inevitable. -L. Trotsky, 1939

Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have made her a Jedi, then.
One thing about Hugh and the individuality. He's a drone, not someone who might be fighting the Collective. Maybe their firewalls were down or something?

He was a Borg, that was by himself, got taught individuality, then got picked up by the Borg again. After the other Borg connected with him, he glanced at LaForge.
So instead of individuality being an outside hack, Hugh was already inside the firewalls. Like someone bringing a home-burned DVD of stuff from the internet, and running it on a corporate computer. All the firewalls that are monitored to keep stuff from getting in have been bypassed, so a hostile program has an easier time having fun.

one thing about the review... okay, dude. I know they look pretty S&M. But there is such a thing as overdoing it.
