E-D nacelles

Post by Atekimogus »

I was recently watching the episode "Eye of the Beholder", the one taking place mostly in one of the nacelles.

The impression I got was that both nacelles are permanently staffed with 4-5 persons but I was wondering.....how the hell do they get there? We do not see a turbolift (and I do not think you could squeeze one into the support struts) so is the only way to reach the working space inside the nacelles via jeffries tube/stairways?

A rough and dirty look at the E-D reveals that the nacelles support struts are approx. 15 decks high, give or take 1-2 decks. Now climbing that two times a day is probably good cardio but still...seems unpractical.

Thoughts?

The struts are something like 6 metres thick, at least one or two decks. I have no problem believing that a turbolift could fit in there.

And if not, site to site transport.

Yeah, a turbolift probably doesn't need to have a floor plan any bigger than 2m x 2m or so.

The Ed Whitefire blueprints (which are obsolete and conflict with later canon) do show turbolifts going to the nacelles, but as best I can tell, the Sternbach blueprints do not show any.

And it doesn't have to be a full size turbo lift. It could be a small man lift. Heck even a zero-G shaft in the struts. Walk in and glide up.

If there are people inside GCS nacelles, can we assume that there are also people inside Constitution Class nacelles? could you fit a turbolift into the struts?

IIRC, the deckplans that I've seen show Jefferies tubes going up to the nacelles (sadly the LCARS Bluepritns site is down); I don't think a turbolift would fit in the Constitution class struts.

Just have a ladder or some stairs.

Or a zero-g tunnel.

Yeah, I'm liking this one. Less complicated. No machinery that might break down.

Aye, that's actually a much better idea.

Yeah...that was my original point, I am sorry but I can't really see Troi climbing 15 decks on a ladder and not beeing a bit phased or out of breath..... .

Turbolift might be possible but I like the zero-g tunnel better actually, no moving parts, no machinery involved...futurama-like.

Would the inertial dampener system work when the nacelle access is in zero-g? If not, I foresee great problems for those who enter the nacelles while at warp or when the ship is accelerating or decelerating.

Nothing in canon that I'm aware of equates the grav plating to an integral part of the inertial dampening system. We know they can vary the grav plating's effect, "In a Mirror Darkly," and no one mentioned any possibility of a problem with the IDS then.

I'm no scientist, but the IDF keeps one from getting smeared into a bulkhead my massive and split second manuvers. If is was just a matter of artifical gravity you'd find someones feet still attached to the deck, with their body ripped away.
