Just had a thought. He says that a civilization that can construct a Dyson shell would be so advanced, they wouldn't need to. Well, who says they'd need to? As stated in 'Shore Leave', even godlike beings need to play once in a while. Maybe it was a science project?

It would be one hell of a waste of resources if they just did it for a laugh.

I could buy them building it as a scientific experiment, however. Though you'd expect them to dismantle it again when they were done.

I've figured it out! The Dyson Sphere was built by the Alterans/Ancients! Think about it; 1. insanely massive resource-intensive project, 2. No real practical purpose except really "because we can," 3. Indicates the creators enjoyed playing God, 4. Left sitting vacant for millennia only to become a deathtrap or spark some other sort of catastrophe. Sounds like the Ancients to me!

Your point? ;) :takecover:

lol, sorry. But it's just... well, why not? Considering Q and Trelane-and yes, I know Trelane was a kid-why wouldn't they do it for shits and giggles?

Seems like a good enough reason to me. After all, noone really needed the pyramids for example.....

Sure they did.

They were landing platforms for alien spacecraft. Duh.

 And then how else are we supposed to keep the souls of dead Pharaohs from escaping in their search for the afterlife and coming back to kill us all?

Yeah, building the Dyson shell might not have been 'necessary' by whatever alien race did, but that hasn't stopped a lot of things from becoming reality.

That's it, Sonic! The Dyson shell was actually the tomb of the builder race's emperors!

Yeah, you may have a point there.

It's a fair enough point. Hell, maybe it was built merely as a monument to their own glory. It's not as though there isn't plenty of modern day governments who've created similarly massive wastes of resources.
