"Justice" and the Prime Directive

Post by Bryan Moore »

In the Season 1 episode "Justice" (I'm rewatching the series in order), isn't any communication with the Edo a violation of the PD? Do we have ANY evidence they are a post-warp society?

They must have met the requirement somehow or else Picard wouldn't have stopped over. When it comes to the PD Picard lusts for the blood of "primitives" every bit as much as Janeway.

Aye, presumably it was legal.

It's been awhile since I saw that episode but wouldn't it be great if they adhered to the local law and get rid of their wunderkind early on? A lost opportunity imho  .

It's a weird situation. On one hand, there is no second thought about mass contact with the natives; but on the other, they are shown to be absolutley flabbergasted by even orbital flight.

One would think that if the PD applied, the E-D would shun contact altogether.

There has to be some other criteria than warp travel. That's the most common but what societies that are highly advanced but never tried to exceed the speed of light?

It also seemed rather half-assed on the part of the Ent crew to go down to this planet yet not even know the basics of their legal system. Namely you break the wrong law you die, so just be polite, courteous, and boff with the natives all you want.

Truly, they must be an advanced civilization. Everyone knows that sluts are the most evolved humans.

Apparently. On that planet they'd screw you if someone dropped a hat. On Risa displaying a mass produced cheap statuette will get you a threeway. Is there a single idyllic planet in Trek where the women aren't whores?

Nope. That's why they're idyllic.

Remember, there's no money, so they're sluts, not whores.

True, can't use the wrong terminology.

I hope Federation medicine is up to snuff in all areas or else Risa is just one huge festering puss filled boil of VD infecting itself on the Galaxy.

Oh, right, General Order 1, Subsection 6, Paragraph 9: When alien vagina is involved, all matters of the Prime Directive may be given low priority. The Vagina Clause, of course =)

Well, I still find the episode ridiculous. But then again, I guess a lot of seasons 1 and 2 are.
