They called it the Prototype, though its trek so that could be stretched if they wanted. Either way, the Vulcan super fleet would have wrecked them.

No argument there. The Vulcan's had ships that would make the Enil worry.

Hadn't thought about it that way but it's true. :?

Could the consolidation of powers into the Federation in the time between TOS and ENT - wtih the consequent tilting of the balance of power to disfavor the Klingons and Romulans creating a temporary stability - have somehow interrupted tech development as the combined tech was sorted and assembled into a unified Starfleet? By TOS there would have been more parity between the Federation and its imperial neighbors and the race would be on again...

Seems like a viable theory to me.

That could be good. I would think that the TE would out number the VHC while the VHC would have far superior tech to the TE.

That's my thoughts as well. Do we want to give them Defiant?

Interesting theory.

Or the technology the Vulcans had in the 22nd century was just that bulky and it was the formation of the UFP that caused a jump start on technological advances...

Nah, I like your idea better.

Another point is the relative stagnation of technological development we've seen after a couple of centuries or so in 'Trek. Withing 2.5 - 3 centuries, humanity had acheived practical FTL travel, along with computers able to handle such travel; replicators; practical man-portable directed-energy weapons, etc. From ENT to DS9+, though, the only advances have been cosmetic, rather than any new ground broken. Perhaps the Vulcans, with their long head-start on humanity, had already reached this technological terminal velocity?

It's possible. You reach a technological plateau and push what you've got to its limit you just have to wait until the next big advance to open up the floodgates again.
