Actually, we don't really know that he did pull the trigger. He *appeared* to... gestured with the weapon. But perhaps he changed his mind at the last moment.

Maybe it really was an accident. Though, even as a kid, I had the impression that he really did intend to kill Fajo.

I figured it was meant to be somewhat ambiguous.

When Data was transported back to the ship, O'Brien detected a weapon in a state of discharge and deactivated it mid-transport. Coulda been an accident, but I doubt it. In Data's mind, that was his only hope of regaining freedom.

I don't think Data would have killed for his freedom - he couldn't allow Fajo to carry on killing people in order to stop Data escaping.

Fajo was actually right, Data would have been rescued even if he hadn't tried to escape. The woman died for nothing.

Bummer for Data. My only fault with this episode was they COULD have made her death more "dramatic". You know, slowly dematerilizing, screaming the whole time, with a look of agony in her eyes.

Would have been awesome, but that'd never happen in US prime time TV. As it was, the dematerializing process was fairly slow.

Data may not have been willing to kill Fajo just to gain his freedom, but would he have done it to prevent others from suffereing the same fate as him? That may fit with his ethics.

What I don't get is that Data is a member of Starfleet. He's took part in battles that led to large numbers of deaths. He must be at least theoretically committed to the possibility of killing people for reasons other than direct self defence.

So killing a kidnapper to gain your freedom... I don't see how that would be such a big no no for him in the first place.

Data is just one of those characters which will never make much sense. Try not to take it to much to heart.

I took much more from the idea that he may have fired as he was being transported away at the end, the idea that he may have fired even while being rescued and therefore had no more purely logical reason to do so.

Maybe he can't kill to just protect himself, but when it comes to protecting other life forms even abstractly, then his protocols disengage, and he can then take all the lives he needs too. Just a thought.

That's similar to what I said earlier, that may explain why he fired on Fajo; to prevent other creatures being harmed by him.
