Well, considering who's in charge of the US, I find the Star Trek groups semi-intelligent.

It works. It might not make sense but its the balance that is struck.
What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

And that "balance" costs the lives of thousands of Federation citizens who die in attacks that were completely preventable if Starfleet had a clue.

People said the Federation should have been destroyed long ago.

I pointed out that since everyone else is just as stupid thats not the case.

Is it stupid? Yes.

Is it canon? Yes.

End of story.

Correct. But do you not see the problem in the Federation's continued survival depending on never running into a race armed with common sense?

Ah see thats the problem. You assume there is a smart species out there. Where as out of unverse we know the writers will never create a smart species. Its a non issue.

No, what I assume is not the problem. What the Federation assumes in-universe is the problem They seem to assume, or never imagine, that they'll ever run into an enemy with common sense. Saying "well, the writers will never allow that to happen" doesn't work. By that logic the GCS was a fine design, because the writers would never have let it get blown up.

Nobody is saying that this state of affairs isn't the case; what we're saying is that relying on the idiocy of other governments isn't a good way to run your own.

They kind of are saying its not the case. If they claim the Federation should have been destroyed long ago they are either ignoring or ignorant of the fact that everyone else is equally stupid.

I think that refers more to "should have, if everyone else wasn't an idiot too."
