For all his visions of a perfect human utopia, GR didn't seem too bothered with adhering to such ideals.

I know the type. He probably justified it to himself with pithy empty philosophies like, "A true visionary like me can't be constrained by modern artificial social constraints" or some crap like that. In other words, another guy making excuses to violate a trust he's entered into.

Psych 101 guess : Gene posited a future of morally perfect people as a way to counter his guilt over his own imperfections. "I am a liar and a cheat... but it's because people are just not evolved enough now, in a few hundred years people won't be like that any more so it's not so bad."

Probably damn close to the truth, Graham.

It could be the other way 'round: "I'm not morally bankrupt, I'm just evolved to the point at which monogamous pair-bonding is irrelevant."

As long as it's irrelevant to all involved in the relationship, that's fine. Otherwise, it's just scumbaggery.

Yeah, that would be the more optimistic take on it. Which means it's likely not the truth...
