That David Brin guy is a moron. I've run across some of his stuff before, and he seems to be having a go at anyone whose works are more popular than his, including Lucas and Tolkein.

Considering the fact that I'd never heard of him until now, and I am fairly well-read, I'd say the set of "anyone whose works are more popular than his" is a large set indeed.

I really really hate it when people clump Star Trek, or sci-fi in general, with fantasy series. I want to strangle people who do that. That kind of comparision can be made to any series. I could probably make fantasy look like sci-fi if I tried. (there's no such thing as magic :P)

Yep. Although I really don't have the inclination to strangle anyone, I could if I were so inclined probably draw parallels to make a cookbook look like fantasy.

Indeed. Like it was said earlier: if you look hard enough you could compare sci-fi to anything.

He's responsible for The Postman. Which while a decent movie is no SW, ST or Firefly.

I wouldn't even consider it a Rollerball.

I've read a fair bit of Brin's stuff, I rate him as pretty good actually. His Uplift universe is a great scenario, and some of the books set in it are amongst my favourites - though some are decidedly not.

He doesn't get to decide what 'true' sci fi is, to be sure. He has as much right to his opinion as anybody, though.

No doubt. My only point is that he has no right to MY opinion.
