They're not exactly any better, from what I've seen.
It'd be nice if the writers were to introduce another major power that didn't have the dodgy morals that pervade the Federation, and weren't absolute bad guys like the Klingons or Romulans. I'm fed up with the black and white, bring in some grey.

That's where the Tzenkethi, Sheliak, or Talarians would have come in nicely.

Hell, it's where a writer with some freaking common sense would have come in handy.

The DITL dictionary lists the definition of oxymoron as: Trek writer with common sense
They say that in the Army,
the women are mighty fine.
They look like Phyllis Diller,
and walk like Frankenstein.

Aye, far too rare.

Good point. For a show meant to be forward-thinking this is a rather backward moral view. I was just watching an interview with Ricardo Montalban in which he said he tried to show villains as people who thought they were right and not just stereotypical bad guys and show some darkness in heroes he portrays - he makes a point to try to show his characters as rounded people and not purely good or bad cartoons.

And it shows in his portrayal of Kahn

the women are mighty fine.
They look like Phyllis Diller,
and walk like Frankenstein.
