Worst Fanfic You've Ever Encountered?

Post by Sionnach Glic »

As the title says, just what is it that you've read that's made you go "Worst. Fanfic. Ever."? And, obviously, why?

For me, it's an utterly godawful yet absolutely hillarious Harry Potter self-insertion fantasy fanfic called "My Immortal". Words cannot convey how bad the whole thing is. You can check out a dramaticaly spoken version of it here. At the very least listen to the first chapter. Purely for the WTF? reaction you'll get. It's mildly NSFW, though, so be warned.

You cannot use "My Immortal," that's a total cop out. Find something else that's equally awful.

Hell, I'd even go so far as to disqualify self inserts given the traditional quality of them.

lol, yeah. You can't use My Immortal because it is so bad. All the rest are trying for second, basically.

"Self-inserts"? You mean the authors literally wrote themselves into the stories?

Yep. You'll see that in about 90% of all fanfiction.

Oh, yeah. Wish-fulfillment fics, for one. Or 'fix fics' in another.

I... am guilty of this. :( Albeit in my very first fanfic. In 1995. When I was about 16 or so and had just rediscovered Star Wars and my very first thought about it was, "Hey, wouldn't the Young Jedi Knights be cool in Star Trek?"

Good lord I am such a dork.

Yeah, but we love you anyways.

I mean, a lot of my characters have aspects of my personality in them (serious anger problems, alcoholism, social ineptitude, etc), but I've never even considered writing myself into any story I've ever written.

I will, sometimes, have some of my friends/readers/even myself cast in small roles and cameos, sort of little gifts to them for their readership and sometimes even birthday presents, but it's never what can be considered a big role. Nothing they/we do can be considered plot-important or balancing.

In my first fic, I was basically a self-insert Marty Stu. A Starfleet fighter pilot/Jedi Knight/guy who gets my high school crush. The main character. In the only other self-insert I do, I'm still a fighter pilot... in two-three scenes with no powers or anything like that while the Sailor Senshi, Jedi Knights and effin' Justice League take care of the bad guys.

Still kinda dumb, but somewhat mitigated. :P

Well small parts aren't bad, I've had friends in some of my fan-fics, none of which are written down, just in my head... I just made myself sound insane... oh well..., but yeah, or I'll have it something like a temporal rift that it pulls in everyone and everyone is working towards getting back, but it's never myself or someone else singularly in it...

No more insane than the rest of us, Nick. ;)

I've read some fics where grammar, characterization and coherent sentence structure are tossed by the wayside for... something.

I'm trying to find a site with a fan fic called "Starfleet Intellegice" for you guys. The standard "can do anything" uber character. Hell, he was a ground trooper that honestly beat the Kobyashi Maru by going "up".

If I can find the site, I'll post it. You guys 'll love it.
