Yeah art and design is full of this sort of stuff.

Also the archive has the Paladin plans in it.

Class: Protostar
Hull design: shaped like the prometheus class but another separation(2 engine, 2 saucer).the warp nacelles protrude from the side and are pushed back on both saucer sections. also about twice the length of prometheus
weaponry: armed w/several photon, and Quantum torpedoes; also has 11 phaser arrays.
defensive: equipped w/ablative armor + regenerative shields
yacht: the bridge can be used as an "escape pod" for the bridge crew
internal: tactical (target practice, etc.)+ civilian holodecks.

Here's a ship concept I've always wanted.

The ship is something like an Akira in design. It's size is about the same as an Intrepid. It's designed for saucer separation, and the saucer is designed to go through an atmosphere and land on a planet. Not a crashlanding, mind, but a nice soft landing.

The saucer is going to be a good size... Intrepid's is eight decks without the bridge even, so about that scale. BUT, there's nothing in it but deck after deck of barracks, cargo bays, vehicle decks. The vehicle decks are at the bottom, and have ramps that open to the surface. So you land the saucer, and a division of ground forces come strolling out, all at once. The saucer becomes a mobile surface base to support them. When it's all over the saucer returns to orbit, docks with the rest, and off it goes.

Upside is, you don't have to depend on the notoriously finnicky transporters. You get to land everybody all at once as one unit, along with their supplies and equipment. The saucer can move as needed. It can still have transporters aboard so it can beam supplies and troops around as needed; the engineering section could leave orbit if needed, abandon the saucer completely. Or not, whatever.

I keep trying to sketch this, but I've never managed it quite right.

Through some ship to shore weapons on your engineering hull, and it's also be great for orbital strikes and ground support.

I'd have one the same general shape as a Nebula Class only larger.

Capable of saucer seperation, with (awaits influx of people telling me this is impossible/impracticle) with a smaller secondary Warp Core in the saucer section, and retractable Warp Nacelles to allow the Saucer Section independent, low warp speed capability. Smaller crew quarters, and mess halls.

And despite the law, Starfleet Regulations, and Kirks standing orders - Romulan Ale *will* be served at diplomatic functions.

Actually, that type of "emergency" vestigial nacelle has already been seen on the Prommie; and if they shoe-horned a decent warp core into the Defiant (which by some SFX is about 12 feet long in some pics) they should be able to put an auxiliary core into a Neb saucer.

I had a similar idea for a landable "Marine base pod" to be carried on a Nebula. :)

ok it's also got landing gear (retractable) on the two saucer sec., bridge compartment, top engineering sec., and escape pods.
escape pods can hold @5 people max. (each having life sign generators so launching all + shuttles can be used as decoys), also has 1 phaser array.
