New site look

Post by IanKennedy »

As an early xmas present we've enhanced the look of the site navigation button. Those on the top strip and menu, plus the top left corner. The new look has a more gradient / 3D look to it. The small round ended buttons will be updated in time. If you can't see the new effect please refresh your browser.

Looks good. It will look even better when all of them are done, more consistant.

Yup. We're not going to fix the graphics for the round ended buttons. I'm working on making them text/css.

They still show up differently from the ones with text one. The borders are different.

I love it. It's a small change* but it makes a huge difference.

*At least cosmetically, I don't know how easy or hard it is to do the coding and stuff.

About 12 lines of code and redrawing about 7 images. All done today, including all the design work.

Thanks. The work on the buttons (round ended things) is going well. Possibly ready tomorrow.

OK, the round ended buttons are now adjusted. They're now mostly text based. Previously every round ended button on the site was a separate graphic. In fact there were two one for the raised button and one for the pressed version. All of that is now replaced with six images, a pair of orange buttons, a pair of blue and a final pair of larger blue buttons. Each of these are blank and the text is added on the fly afterwards. This should make the site lighter as there will only ever be a maximum of six buttons to download, no matter how many buttons are on display. Equally, it makes the site much easier to maintain as we will no longer have to update each and every button if we make a change. This reduction in images should lead to a speed improvement especially on slower networks, like mobile phones. Obviously the new buttons have the gradient applied as the menu buttons did yesterday.

As ever if you have an issue please ensure you have reloaded the page and have cleared your cache (if required). The new system has been tested on Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari on Macintosh and Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari and Internet Explorer on Windows. Enjoy.

That's not part of the new look. It's xmas decorations, we were late putting them up. They go away on about 6th January.
