OK, then the sea destroys the sub. As in the black whole destroys the Narada.

I think the point is that it's like saying that torpedoes don't sink ships - the sudden intake of water does. While technically correct, the point is that the water doesn't sink the ship unless the torpedo first holes the ship.

IanKennedy wrote:Yes, but isn't that like saying that the sea is what sinks ships. After all the torpedo from the submarine only sends the sub to the bottom, it's the sea that corrodes the sub and eventually dissolves it completely.

Its actually closer to saying its the whirlpool IN the sea that tore it to pieces as it was suffering damage.

Yes, but the root cause of whirlpools ability to damage the ship was the damage caused by the Kirk and Spock.

It's a bit like a ship being caught in a whirlpool and on the cusp of breaking free, when some guy in a speedboat hits the ship, causing it to fall into the whirlpool.

Only if the ship is perfectly able to survive a passage through the whirlpool completely safely and emerge on the other side intact and unaffected.

Well, yes, I'd assumed that was being taken as a given in my analogy.

Also, does anyone else here think we're really overdoing it on the analogies?

All I'm saying is that we may have put too much jam on the bread. Whether we're overflowing the bucket remains to be seen.

Those are all commonly used analogies... I only have heard of a few?
