I think the point is that it's like saying that torpedoes don't sink ships - the sudden intake of water does. While technically correct, the point is that the water doesn't sink the ship unless the torpedo first holes the ship.

Yes, but the root cause of whirlpools ability to damage the ship was the damage caused by the Kirk and Spock.

Only if the ship is perfectly able to survive a passage through the whirlpool completely safely and emerge on the other side intact and unaffected.

Well, yes, I'd assumed that was being taken as a given in my analogy.

Also, does anyone else here think we're really overdoing it on the analogies?
