Re: So how does Tony Stark make his money?

We have a couple of clues about this from other Marvel Movies. In the Avengers there are two things: First, at the beginning of the film they're celebrating the turning on of Stark Tower, specifically the Arc Reactor in its basement, which will make the building completely self-sufficient/pump energ...

Re: Should sci fi ships use VLS?

Here is a clip showing one of the alien ships, about the 1:09 mark you can see the small turreted cells being deployed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PktGR2t-yX4 (Not true VLS, more like small expendable projectiles being fired like an artillery or howitzer shell.) Something like that could certa...

Re: Should sci fi ships use VLS?

It occurs to me that a VLS system isn't all that great for Space Combat. VLS works because I can launch straight up, then turn around using aerodynamics and boost toward my target which will be below my starting height. In space you don't have aerodynamics, meaning any VLS style launch will have to...

Re: How would you uplift Earth?

The whole time I was reading this I was thinking that my first act, would be to basically empower the UN or other equivalent body, where all nations/peoples are represented. Then I offer them my services, but only under their agreement. I don't know how I would define agreement, originally I was thi...

I'm peer-reviewed and published.

I think you have to have a subscription to PRD to get the actual text, so for anyone that is that curious you can get that here

Re: What's the latest in people's lives?

So I've spent the last few days dashing through various European cities in my attempt to see everything. Spent a day and a half in Dublin, another day in London, two days in Paris, and a total of about 20 hours in Frankfurt. I'm now in Schmitten for a Seminar

Re: The USS Franklin

I read something today that the registry mismatch is because of the re-registration of ships into the Federation. We know that the Franklin was originally an Earth ship, and then was recommissioned as a Federation vessel after it's founding. It got the NX prefix as a tribute to the fact that it was ...

Getting around in Europe

So in August a friend and I will be attending a little program in Germany as part of my research, but I'm going to be taking a few days before that to do some traveling. The goal, ambitious as it is, is to hit: Dublin, Ireland Stapleford, England London, England Paris, France Frankfurt, Germany The ...

My grandparents were farmers....I'm a physicist, clearly my families occupations have very little to do with my occupation.

Beyond that Picard won't have any decedents. He never had kids, his only brother and his nephew were killed in a fire. There will be no more Picards.

Re: Spoileriffic Force Awakens Thread

One thing I was a bit unlear about is that they seemed to refer to the Republic and the Rebellion as if they were two different things. I was curious why there even is a Rebellion any more, since the Empire has fallen and the Republic is back in charge in most places. I guess you could say they're ...

Re: Spoileriffic Force Awakens Thread

I think blowing up the republic planet was supposed to be like blowing up Alderaan in IV. It shows that they mean business and serves as the "warning shot" to our heroes, and it was supposed to be more emotionally resonating for the audience since we were invested in the neo-republic after...
