Re: Spoileriffic Beyond review and discussion

I finally got around to seeing the movie (a wife, kids, job, house, and dog give me an overfull life). I did enjoy my time in the theater, and I'm liking it even more on reflection. First, I like that it still seemed like Trek. I was really worried that it was going to be "Fast and Furious"...

Re: Starbase Yorktown (mild spoiler)

I also liked how "Trek" the Yorktown concept was. It also made me feel like I was getting something for my movie dollars as those special effects were clever and beyond what I'd expect from a fan production.

Re: The USS Franklin

I actually came to quite like the concept. It seemed to fit with Krall, as they were both famous for their service to earth and humanity, but in the new Era of Starfleet both were left behind by the times. I can even accept the bike. For one, if you're going to talk about consistency, they've alread...

Re: Fourth Law of Thermodynamics

My knee jerk reaction was no. Murphey's law is rather cynical in nature, better fitting with Marine Sergeants than Starfleet officers. I did a little Googling, and found: http://memory-beta.wikia.com/wiki/Murphy's_Law Since they've managed to locate a couple references in non-cannon novels and an eb...

Re: Rumours, news and general speculation

Agreed with GK - yes, there has to be a contingent of middies/able seamen/ratings/whatever-the-hell aboard, doing all the day-to-day crap... but watching that for 45 minutes hardly makes compelling television. First off, has anybody here not watched Red Dwarf? If so you'll thank yourself for remedy...

Re: Rumours, news and general speculation

I wonder if this will actually work. The original intent for The West Wing was this - that the President would be somebody who showed up fairly infrequently, whilst the show was mostly from the POV of the staff, with Rob Lowe as the lead. That lasted one episode, because the President was the one e...

Re: What's the latest in people's lives?

OK, my international friends - I have to say I really, really tried to get behind watching the sevens in the Olympics. I'm sorry - yes, the play is non-stop unlike American football. That is, I'm afraid, the only positive I can take away from it. It is true that rugby players don't wear pads... but...

Re: Rumours, news and general speculation

One would think "the sheer weight of consistency" would be considerably greater when there are continuity issues both before and after the timeframe in question, rather than just before. Such was the major problem with ENT, which many folks here predicted before it ran. I'm guessing some ...

Re: Could you pass the UK citizenship test?

22/24 Though two disclamers -I'd read the first post before taking the quiz, hence I knew the patron saint of Wales -I think you were supposed to have to make two responses for a number of those, but it only let me select one (so I only had to get one of the two to get it noted as correct). Also aft...

Re: What's the latest in people's lives?

Huh. Here you buy alcohol in an "off-license" or standard shop like a supermarket. You can buy pretty much any type of alcohol anywhere that sells alcohol, subject only to the range they choose to stock. Typically you'll buy beer in a four pack of cans but there are also six packs, twelve...

Re: Rumours, news and general speculation

I'm hoping the rumors that it takes place between ST VI and TNG pan out, at least relative to between Enterprise and TOS. I think like most of you I'd have liked to have seen something set maybe a generation after DS9/VOY/Nemesis, though it seems a very unpopular option among the writers. I wonder i...

Re: Rumours, news and general speculation

Agreed with GK. Fiddling with the details of that design is simply putting lipstick on a pig. As far as "exploring sexuality," why would that even be a thing, any more than hair color or taste in music? I'm sorry, I don't know what that means. I was just referring to their frequent mentio...

Re: Rumours, news and general speculation

The registry of the USS Constellation in the original series was NCC-1017. The Grissom from Star Trek III was NCC-638 If the show is set between Ent and TOS, it will be the Ent issues all over again - they'll introduce a range of species and situations that never existed before and we'll all have t...
