Plotline

The Enterprise investigates the disappearance of a group of Illyrians, a genetically engineered species, banned by the Federation. An ion storm approaches and the away team beam back to the Enterprise. Later the away team is discovered to be infected by a virus that makes them addicted to light. Number One reveals that she is an Illyrian, which explains why she is immune to the virus. Doctor M'Benga synthesizes a cure from her blood.

Trapped on the planet, Pike and Spock work out that the colonists must have been attmpting to reverse their genetic modifications, in an attempt to join the Federation. They surmise that they have transformed themselves into plasma-like beings. These beings protect Pike and Spock from the storm and they are able to return to the Enterprise when everyone is cured.

Number One attempts to resign, however, Pike refuses to accept her resignation. She wonders if he would have been as agreeable if she hadn't helped save the crew. Number One learns that the virus managed to get passed the transporter because the ship's medical filters on the transporter were outdated. She challenges Dr. Joseph M'Benga and discovers that he is holding his daughter, Rukiya, in stasis in the transporter buffer until he can find a cure for her disease.
