Review : Quite possible the classic Trek novel, this was an early interweaving of clues and clever speculation about Vulcan culture and history. I suspect that Ms. Duane is a historian at heart, and the interludes from Vulcan's past are much appreciated, as they lend great depth to the reader's understanding. Depth is the keyword, not only in terms of the complex (more than merely "logical") Vulcan culture, but in terms of character development and technological speculation. The central premise, the secession of Vulcan from the Federation over ethical issues is a nice counterpoint these days to the trashy, illogical, violent Vulcans of Enterprise. This book is prerequisite and the perfect companion for My Enemy My Ally and The Romulan Way, works of equal calibre on the "lost" Vulcans.

Review : ASR has summed up my own opinion pretty well, but this book deserves another vote of approval. 'Spock's World' captures virtually everything that is good and inspiring about Trek. If you could take this book back to 1967 and give it to Roddenberry, he'd break down in tears because he couldn't possibly put it on TV with his budget.

Review : Quite possibly the greatest "Giant Novel" of the Original Series, and amongst Imzadi, Dark Mirror, and various other TNG super novels in terms of quality and scope. There is so much material in this novel, one wonders why some aspects were not converted to cannon. Before ENT introduced a Vulcan Civil War, we had the various eras of Vulcan, from primitive, non-speaking days, to "midievil," to space-faring, to near war with their version of Nuclear toys. But all of this plot plays out off and on while we hear a series of debates as to whether or not the Vulcans should leave the Federation. T'Pau (of Amok Time fame) is dying, and a petition for Vulcan to leave the UFP is being considered. Everyone gets a say of their thoughts, even someone you wouldn't expect to voice a thought. Very, very good, and even newer series and new cannon cannot harm this classic. A must-have by any means.

Review : The first Star Trek novel I read in my early days as a Trekker... and still one of my favorites. It's very insightful, and as aforementioned, it cannot be harmed by the recent manglings a certain series has caused. "Spock's World" becomes "Our World" as we are guided through events in Vulcan history and through focal points in "current" political affairs between Vulcan and the UFP. By far one of the greatest Trek novels -- a MUST read for anyone!
